A self-titled album reached number ten on Billboard's R&B chart, led by the success of "Shake" (number four R&B) and "Open Up Your Mind" (number 13 R&B). They followed it later in the year with The Gap Band II, an album that spawned two more Top Ten R&B singles.

While the consensus opinion that The Gap Band stopped producing good albums after isn't true, as 's Gap Band VII serves as a counterexample, preceding album Gap Band VI doesn't do much to dispel this notion. It's clear that the band wanted to take a bite of the mainstream pop apple, as the album is less funk-oriented than previous efforts.
